Courtney
Bauman is a Peace Corps volunteer in Anker,
Namibia – a small village near
the Namib Desert in Southern Africa.
In January 2004, Courtney began work with Edward
Garoeb Primary School in the small town.
In the past year, Courtney has
worked with the teachers and students at her school on various education
projects such as after-school programs, professional development
workshops, and most recently, plans for development of a functional
English-language school library.
The school serves 265 students in grades 1-7, who
currently read the English language
at a 1st to 4th
grade level.

In January 2003, Courtney
began writing donation letters to organizations and publishers. Thanks to
generous donations from Courtney’s hometown in Oklahoma and from several
organizations, the school now has close to 1,000 books.
Because a large portion
of the roof on the school was blown off during a storm in January 2003,
there is presently no space for a library at the school. However, the
books are kept at the school dormitory where the kids have access to them
every afternoon during library time. The students love library time and
really enjoy having access to books. The teachers also enjoy using the
library to find teaching materials and to discover books they can read in
English.
In 2005, Courtney and her
school plan to renovate one of the newly covered school classrooms and
turn it into a school library.
The school need books for reading levels grades
1-4. Storybooks and reference books are all needed.

Namibia is located on the west coast of Africa, just north of South
Africa. It is one of Africa's newest nations,
having claimed
independence
in 1990 after seventy years of South
African rule.
With independence, the Namibian government declared English
as the nation's official language, and has since worked to
promote equitable social and economic development for its
population.

Illiteracy and poverty challenge the economic development of Namibia; they also limit
popular participation in social and economic affairs. The country is in
the infancy of a process
to develop a literary tradition, and
currently the schools of Namibia are
bearing the burden of providing access to English language literature.
